If you haven't been to New Orleans since Katrina, by all means book that flight now. While I don't necessarily recommend an August visit (unless perspiration is your thing) April and October are great months in the Crescent City. In April you can choose between the French Quarter Fest and one or both weekends of JazzFest. I have to tell you, though, no city on earth takes Halloween more seriously - or hilariously -than NOLA.
And if you're lucky, the amazing Trombone Shorty might be in town.
